Pharmaceutical Waste Treatment

Expired and unused medicines must be removed from circulation and destroyed safely, so they do not reach the market again or harm the environment. Wavy Solutions develops integrated pharmaceutical waste systems that cover the full chain. We plan collection, sorting and secure treatment as one system, using European technology and engineering.

An integrated system

Pharmaceutical waste comes from pharmacies, hospitals, warehouses, distributors and manufacturers. It includes tablets, liquids, packaging and, in some cases, hazardous substances. A working system links these sources to a treatment facility through controlled collection, transport, sorting and documentation. We design each part so that every batch can be traced from pickup to final destruction. This traceability matters to authorities, to pharmaceutical companies protecting their brands and to the public, who expect expired medicines to disappear for good.

Collection and sorting

We plan collection points, secure containers and transport routes suited to the volume and spread of the waste sources. At the facility, waste is received, weighed, recorded and sorted by type, because different categories need different treatment. Packaging materials such as cardboard and plastics can often be separated for recycling. We design the receiving and sorting areas for safe handling, controlled access and clear records, so that the facility can meet regulatory inspections.

Secure treatment

The treatment stage destroys the active substances so that the medicines cannot be recovered or reused. Suitable technologies depend on the waste types, volumes and local rules, and may include high-temperature treatment with proper flue gas cleaning. We evaluate the options, select equipment from European suppliers and design the facility around it, including utilities, emissions control and residue handling. For Saudi Arabia, we have developed a proposal for a national pharmaceutical waste system, and our Dammam office coordinates with local stakeholders.

What the client should prepare

Clients for this service are usually waste management companies, investors or public bodies. We need an estimate of the waste volumes and types, the area to be covered and the main sources. Information on the proposed site, available utilities and the relevant environmental and health regulations helps us shape the design. If the client plans to seek a licence or financing, we can prepare the technical and financial study that supports the application. We then follow the project through construction and commissioning.
